Ashley’s Journey into Nursing and Leadership

Ashley began her nursing studies at Conestoga College and Georgian College, two institutions renowned for their healthcare programs. Her academic journey laid a strong foundation for her future endeavours.

Transitioning from retail to personal attendant work in home care marked a significant shift in her career. This move allowed her to gain hands-on experience and develop a deep understanding of patient needs. Working across Grey Bruce and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ashley honed her skills and expanded her knowledge base.

Her dedication and hard work did not go unnoticed. She volunteered as a member of the discipline committee and ran as a council member at the College of Nurses of Ontario while working as a charge nurse in retirement homes. These roles allowed her to influence patient care and advocate for better senior care practices.

Ashley’s leadership skills were further recognized when she held significant roles at the College of Nurses Ontario, including vice president RPN. Her contributions in these roles have had a lasting impact on the nursing community.

Commitment to Lifelong Learning

Ashley’s commitment to lifelong learning is evident in her pursuit of numerous certificates in geriatrics, foot care, and palliative nursing. These certifications not only enhanced her skills but also enabled her to provide specialized care to her patients.

She is actively engaged in the Certified Advanced Practice Nurse in Palliative Care (CAPC) program. This program involves weekly check-ins and assignments, ensuring that participants stay updated with the latest practices. The limited class size fosters a conducive learning environment, allowing for personalized attention and in-depth discussions.

Balancing continuous education with professional duties is no easy feat. Yet, Ashley manages to excel in both areas. Her dedication to learning and professional growth is truly commendable.

Embracing Technology in Home Care

In her role as a home care nurse, Ashley has embraced technology to enhance patient care. She uses a phone for calls and texts, ensuring that she is always reachable. A tablet serves as her primary tool for taking notes and connecting with service providers.

Cloud-based systems and WellSky are integral to her work. These platforms allow her to create and manage care plans efficiently on the go.

Challenges and Innovations in Home Care

Despite the advancements in technology, Ashley faces several challenges in home care. One of the primary issues is the difficulty of reaching a live person in emergencies with various providers. This can be a significant hindrance when immediate assistance is required.

Thank you Ashley for sharing your journey with us and being open to innovation and continuous learning!
